Our Beginnings

If you have not checked out if your succession has been finalised by the Maori Land Court check out the Block details at www.maorilandonline.govt.nz and see that your succession details have been updated.

Or if you have not succeeded yet, we are in the process of organising a wananga in 2022 to help whanau with these papers.

As you can see on the left is a list of the 104 original owners. If you can whakapapa back to these ancestors then you are well on your way, as this is a great starting point for succession.

On behalf of the Turitea Marae office holders, beneficiaries and Trustees, we welcome you into the fold.

So, a little detail regarding Turitea Marae (TUROTO C2B2B4B1).

Our ancestors partitioned the land in 1946, and was gazetted as a Maori Reservation in 1972 for the purpose of a marae, a meeting place, recreational ground and urupa for the common use & benefit of the Ngati Maniapoto tribe.

Our ancestors however were not successful in developing the land to its full potential and over the last 20+ years the Trustees and previous committee have been dormant for a number of reasons.

However in late 2020, new interest had grown in some of the younger generation to revitalise and realise our ancestor’s goals to develop our Marae.

As you can see from the photo on the right, there once was a village here at Turitea.

Nanny Tau including the Salvations and others lived and worked this land. Not many photos have survived over the years, but anyone that could help us create an archive of precious memories and share with our whanaunga would be greatly appreciated.

Our Trustees

We have 7 Trustees for this block, however 3 members have passed on in the last 20 years and 1 has resigned.

The current and still active Trustees are:

Louis Tahi Bidois, Johnny Maihi Victor Elliott Jnr & Gabrielle Kuiahine Morgan-Logan.

The newly elected trustees at a special hui in Feb 2021 were:

Mellissa Gage, Gaye Wahitapu, Inu Salvation, Marina Marsters. These newly elected trustees of 2021, have been ratified by the Māori Land Court in July 2021, and can now be seen on www.maorilandonline.govt.nz

So technically we are starting from the ground up. We have consulted with beneficiaries and created and ratified a  Marae Charter for Turitea Marae at our AGM June 2022.

This Marae Charter will allow us to be eligible for future funding to prepare for our Marae Development Plan and Implementation.

So we would love to include you and your whanau in any and all consultations regarding the Marae Development Plan.

Email reminders will go out to those we have on the database. Our secretary will keep beneficiaries up to date.

If you know of any other whanau that descend from the owners listed above, please forward our email address onto them.

Or have them visit our site www.turiteamarae.co.nz and have them register their details, which is available in the footer of any and all pages.
